State-of-the-Art Old World Craft Since 1974
Faustrollean was born from a simple conviction: that your craft is a reflection of you, your commitment to produce well made things is part of your integrity. Ken Zell founded the company in Portland in 1974, bringing with him a formal woodworking training that began in 1958 and a restless curiosity that has never stopped driving Faustrollean forward.
The name itself tells you something about how we think. “Faustrollean” comes from Alfred Jarry’s pataphysics — the science of imaginary solutions. It’s a nod to the idea that the most interesting problems are the ones no one has solved yet, and that the best craftspeople are the ones who refuse to stop asking why. That spirit has shaped how we approach every project for over fifty years.
Ken has since handed the company to his son, Dylan, who has worked at Faustrollean since he was 22 years old. Now, more than 30 years later, Faustrollean remains family-owned and operated. What hasn’t changed is the culture Ken built: a workplace where curiosity is valued, where “good enough” isn’t, and where the work itself is the point.
We are a continuous learning and process improvement company—driven by curiosity, refined by experience, and committed to delivering zero-defect work in every project we undertake.
